
The Ekiti State Police Command has launched an investigation into a stampede that led to the death of three persons during a post-convocation party in Ikere Ekiti.
The incident reportedly occurred at a hotel where students of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, gathered to celebrate after their second convocation ceremony held on Saturday.
According to sources, the situation became chaotic during the overnight party, resulting in panic and a stampede that claimed lives.
Confirming the development, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, said Commissioner of Police Michael Falade had ordered a full investigation into the incident.
Abutu explained that preliminary findings showed that the students moved to the hotel for a celebration after the convocation.
During the gathering, an altercation allegedly broke out between two students, which escalated into panic as others attempted to flee the venue.
In the ensuing stampede, three persons—including a hotel staff member and two students—lost their lives. Their bodies have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
The police commissioner expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that the command would thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
