Woman rejects mother’s request for ‘omugwo’ after years of neglect over husband’s finances

A woman has recounted how her mother allegedly refused to support her during her first pregnancy because her husband was not financially buoyant, but is now seeking to return years later to do omugwo.
Sharing her experience, the woman said she was living in a modest one-bedroom apartment at the time, which still had basic comforts such as air conditioning. However, her mother reportedly declined to stay with her, opting instead to live with her sister, whose husband was wealthier and could provide a more comfortable environment.
Both sisters were pregnant around the same period, but while her mother chose to care for the other daughter, she said her own delivery was met with little acknowledgment. The situation left her deeply hurt, forcing her sister-in-law to step in and handle the traditional omugwo responsibilities.
She further revealed that shortly after childbirth, her family faced financial hardship when her husband lost his job. He reportedly spent over a year learning a new trade while offering whatever financial support he could, as she sustained the home through a small business with occasional assistance from her sister.
During this period, she claimed her mother remained distant and uninvolved, having previously opposed her marriage.
According to her, their fortunes later improved as her husband became financially stable and began securing contracts.
Now expecting another child, she said her mother has re-established contact after years of silence, expressing a desire to come for omugwo. However, the woman stated that she declined the request, choosing instead to rely once again on her supportive sister-in-law.
