An elderly woman has stirred emotional reactions on social media after revealing that she gave up her chances of marriage to cater for her siblings during her youth.

In a viral video shared on April 12, 2026, the woman narrated how financial hardship and family responsibilities shaped the course of her life, leaving little room for personal aspirations.

She explained that she spent her younger years moving from place to place in search of means of livelihood, prioritising the welfare of her siblings over her own future.

According to her, survival came first at the time, as several dependants relied on her for support.

Reflecting on her past, she said her decisions were driven by necessity rather than personal choice, noting that she had to focus on providing for her family instead of pursuing marriage.

The viral video has continued to generate diverse reactions on X, with users sharing mixed opinions on the veracity of the claims, family responsibility, personal sacrifice, and societal expectations.

A user, thefinancialthrive (@thefinthrive), wrote, “Story for the gods. If you ask the family members, they will also have a story to tell for not taking good care of her.”

Another user, icebtcx (@icebtcx_n), said, “Make she go rest, e no get how you go look after your family wey dem no go look after you. You go enjoy your life come dey whine us.”

Gabito (@boltonvice1) took a critical stance, questioning aspects of her account.

Also weighing in, Bilitzo (@nifemi_os) described the situation as part of the broader “black tax” conversation, asking if African families place excessive burdens on relatives.

Olowoshibi_meey02 (@Verratti001) emphasised the culture of sacrifice, noting that people often go to great lengths for family, while condemning those who later deny such obligations.

In a more reflective comment, Obidaddy ya (@paulobijiofor) linked the situation to systemic challenges, describing it as evidence of generational hardship driven by poor governance.

Amy (@AMAKZEE) advised that individuals should consider having or adopting children for support in old age, arguing that extended family may not always be dependable.

Similarly, Tweetsfromearth (@chirikimmy) highlighted cultural expectations, expressing concern over who would care for the woman in her later years, while hoping her siblings would reciprocate her sacrifices.
