A 75-year-old blind man, identified as Mr Olaseni Arotiba, has reportedly been left homeless and without care after his children allegedly refused to take responsibility for him.

The situation came to light after a Good Samaritan, Olapeju Agunbiade, shared his ordeal on Facebook.

Agunbiade disclosed that the elderly man was dropped off late at night at Omotayo Maternity by a commercial motorcyclist, who left him there without any assistance.

He was subsequently taken in by the facility’s staff, who provided him with food and a place to sleep.

When questioned about his background, Arotiba said he had been staying in a hotel but was asked to leave as the management planned to renovate the facility.

The elderly man who spoke both English and Yoruba added that he spent the previous night at his caregiver’s residence but could not remain there.

According to him, his son, Mayorkun Arotiba, had been footing his hotel bills for a while but had since become unreachable. He further revealed that the hotel had contacted the son to pick him up before his eviction, but he never showed up.

Attempts by the maternity staff to reach his children reportedly yielded no positive outcome.

Agunbiade said one of his daughters bluntly denied any relationship with him, stating that she “ceased to have a father” from childhood.

His son, on the other hand, reportedly said he was preoccupied with caring for their ailing mother in the hospital and could not attend to him.

“The long and short is that none of his contacts is ready to take responsibility for him,” Agunbiade wrote.

It was gathered that the elderly man has only N10,000 left in his bank account, while efforts to secure a nursing home for him have so far been unsuccessful.

In a later update, Agunbiade disclosed that Arotiba had been moved to the Accident and Emergency Department of Ring Road State Hospital for further care.

Agunbiade warned men to live responsibly and care for their loved ones so that they would not be stranded in old age.
