A Brigade Commander of the Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. O. O. Braimah has reportedly been killed during a deadly overnight attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists in Borno State.

The attack, which targeted a military formation in Benesheikh, Kaga Local Government Area, is said to have occurred late Wednesday night, leaving multiple casualties.

Security analyst Brant Philip disclosed the development in a post on Thursday, stating that insurgents launched a coordinated assault on the base.

“ISWAP attacked the Nigerian military camp in Benisheikh, northeast Nigeria. Large fire sources were detected from inside the camp and according to security reports, Commanding Officer O.O. Braimah was killed during the attack,” he wrote.

Senior officer killed

Further reports indicate that the late Braimah was a Brigadier General, making him one of the highest-ranking officers killed in recent attacks in the North-East.

Analysts note that his death marks the most senior casualty since the killing of another top officer in a similar ambush in Borno in late 2025.

Multiple casualties reported

Local sources revealed that the coordinated attacks extended beyond Benesheikh, with another assault reported in Pulka community in Gwoza Local Government Area.

Civilians, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, security personnel, and several insurgents were reportedly killed during the attacks, although exact figures remain unclear.

A resident, Malam Lawal Benesheikh, also confirmed the incident in a social media post, describing the attack as devastating.

“Innalillahi wa Inna’illaihin raji’un. Boko Haram has again succeeded in eliminating the commanding officer of Benisheikh. The insurgents stormed the military formation in large numbers,” he wrote.

Renewed security concerns

The latest attack underscores ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where insurgent groups, including ISWAP, continue to launch assaults on military formations and civilian communities.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The Nigerian military has, in recent months, intensified operations in the region, but attacks such as this continue to raise concerns about the resilience and tactics of insurgent groups operating in the area.
