Suspected bandits have reportedly killed two girls abducted from Janjala community in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, despite the payment of N13 million ransom by their families.

The victims, identified as Abida and Ummi, were among several residents kidnapped during an attack on the community on March 1, 2026.

It was gathered that the assailants had abducted about 13 persons, including a vigilante member, his wife, and other residents, during the raid.

Sources in the area said the kidnappers initially demanded N14 million for the release of the victims, insisting on full payment despite repeated pleas from the families.

After weeks of efforts, the families were able to raise N13 million, which was reportedly delivered to the abductors around the Hayin Dam forest in neighbouring Kachia Local Government Area on Saturday, April 4.

Following the payment, some of the women held in captivity were released, while the male victims were reportedly held back.

However, shortly after the ransom was delivered, the kidnappers reportedly informed the families that the two girls had been killed.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Daily Trust that the victims were killed while in captivity after resisting advances from members of the gang.

The source said the development came as a shock to the families, who had hoped the payment would secure the release of all the victims.

He added that the bandits were still demanding the outstanding N1 million balance, alongside food supplies, before releasing the remaining captives.

A security source also confirmed the killing of the two victims but declined to give further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A community leader in Janjala equally confirmed the development, saying the information was relayed by relatives of the abducted victims.

“In fact, it was this afternoon that one of the family members of the abducted victims called to inform us that two girls among the victims had been killed,” the community leader said.

The incident has heightened concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of Kaduna State, particularly in rural communities that have continued to experience repeated attacks and abductions by armed groups.
