U.S. Vice President JD Vance led urgent overnight efforts to broker a peace deal with Iran as President Donald Trump threatened to ‘blow up everything’ if negotiations fail.
The late-night diplomatic push on Sunday reportedly resulted in a proposed ceasefire plan mediated by Pakistan. According to reports, the framework includes an immediate halt to hostilities, followed by further negotiations within a 15 to 20-day period.
The initiative was coordinated through backchannel discussions involving Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, alongside U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, while Iran’s position was represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
Despite the progress, the proposal has not yet received formal approval from the White House and is not expected to immediately resolve tensions around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump has set a deadline of Tuesday evening, warning that failure to reach an agreement could trigger extensive military action targeting key infrastructure in Iran.
The ultimatum has already impacted global markets, with oil prices remaining elevated above $100 per barrel despite slight fluctuations. Fuel costs have also risen sharply, reflecting concerns over potential disruption to global energy supplies.
Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry confirmed that it has communicated its terms through intermediaries, signalling a willingness to engage, though significant differences remain.
The White House is expected to provide further updates as diplomatic efforts continue ahead of the deadline.
