A U.S. weapons systems officer stranded for nearly two days in hostile Iranian terrain has been rescued in a complex special operations mission involving hundreds of personnel, surveillance drones, and multiple aircraft, according to reports.
The airman was one of two crew members forced to eject after their F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran. While the pilot was recovered within hours, the second crew member landed in a remote mountainous region near Talkhuncheh in Isfahan Province and was left to evade capture alone.
Despite injuries and limited equipment, the officer managed to survive by relying on advanced military survival training.
Armed with only a handgun, he reportedly trekked across rugged terrain for miles, eventually reaching higher ground where he could cautiously activate his emergency beacon without revealing his position to enemy forces.
Iranian authorities quickly mobilised search teams and offered a financial reward for his capture, prompting local militia groups to comb the area.
At the same time, U.S. intelligence agencies worked to locate the missing airman. Using surveillance assets, including drones, officials were able to track his position while also spreading misleading information to confuse Iranian forces and buy time.
As the situation became increasingly urgent, U.S. forces began shaping the battlefield. A-10 attack aircraft were deployed to strike approaching enemy units, disrupt communications, and slow advancing forces near the extraction zone.
The rescue mission was then launched by elite Special Forces, including members of SEAL Team 6.
Commandos were inserted into Iranian territory via transport aircraft and helicopters, landing at a remote desert airstrip before moving toward the airman’s location. Using lightweight helicopters, they successfully reached the mountainous area and extracted him.
However, the operation took a dangerous turn during the evacuation phase. Several aircraft, including two transport planes and a helicopter, became immobilised on the rough desert terrain, leaving additional U.S. personnel temporarily stranded behind enemy lines.
With Iranian fighters reportedly closing in, reinforcements were rushed in to complete the evacuation. Under pressure and amid incoming fire, U.S. forces managed to load all personnel onto remaining aircraft and withdraw from the area.
Before departing, troops destroyed the disabled aircraft to prevent them from being captured by Iranian forces, sacrificing millions of dollars’ worth of equipment in the process.
U.S. officials have described the mission as a major success, emphasising that both airmen were recovered and no American lives were lost.
President Donald Trump praised the operation as a demonstration of U.S. military capability and commitment to recovering personnel under any circumstances.
Iranian state media, however, disputed aspects of the account, claiming that some U.S. aircraft were shot down and dismissing the rescue narrative as misleading.
Reports from Iranian sources also suggested casualties occurred during the operation, though these claims have not been independently verified.
The dramatic rescue followed a chaotic day of aerial combat in which multiple U.S. aircraft were reportedly brought down, marking a significant escalation in tensions.
Despite the risks and setbacks, the mission ultimately succeeded in retrieving the stranded airman from deep inside hostile territory.
