A Nigerian cleric, Reverend (Mrs) Stellamaris Ajetomobi, has come under intense public scrutiny after a viral video showed her making bold and controversial remarks about marriage and intimacy.
The clip, which has been widely circulated across social media platforms, captures the pastor’s wife addressing a congregation while sharing her views on marital roles and responsibilities.
Viral remarks trigger mixed reactions
In the trending video, Ajetomobi described sexual intimacy as the primary reason for marriage, emphasising that it is a central obligation between spouses.
She contrasted her life before marriage with her expectations afterwards, suggesting that intimacy is the defining factor of her union.
The cleric said she had access to clothes, shelter and food in her father’s house so there was nothing else she wanted from a marriage other than sex.
She further stated that, within the boundaries of marriage, her husband is the only person she is permitted to share such intimacy with, framing it as both a moral and spiritual responsibility.
Her remarks also implied that while other domestic duties—such as cooking, cleaning, and childcare—can be delegated or supported by others, marital intimacy is a responsibility that cannot be outsourced.
Public reactions and wider conversation
The video has since sparked widespread debate online. While some social media users interpreted her comments as a candid, if blunt, expression of marital expectations, others criticised the framing of marriage as being primarily centred on sex.
Critics argue that such statements oversimplify the institution of marriage, which they say also involves companionship, mutual respect, emotional support, and shared responsibilities.
Supporters, however, contend that the cleric was highlighting an often under-discussed aspect of marriage, particularly within religious settings where conversations about intimacy are sometimes avoided.
Broader implications
The controversy has reignited discussions around the role of religious leaders in addressing sensitive topics, especially from the pulpit.
