French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly rebuked remarks made by US President Donald Trump, describing them as “neither elegant nor up to standard,” after Trump mocked his marriage during a recent White House event.
Macron responds to personal remarks
The response followed comments by Trump during an Easter lunch at the White House, where he joked about a viral 2025 video involving France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron.
The clip had appeared to show her pushing Macron’s face during an official trip to Vietnam—an incident the French president previously dismissed as misinformation.
Trump referenced the footage while criticising France’s stance on ongoing geopolitical tensions, suggesting Macron was “still recovering” from the incident.
The remarks quickly drew backlash across France’s political spectrum.
Speaking during a visit to South Korea, Macron avoided escalating the rhetoric but made clear his disapproval, stressing that such comments fell short of diplomatic standards expected between allied leaders.
French politicians rally behind Macron
Trump’s comments triggered rare unity among French political figures, including critics of Macron.
Yael Braun-Pivet condemned the remarks as inappropriate, noting that global leaders should be focused on serious international crises rather than personal mockery.
Similarly, opposition figure Manuel Bompard described the comments as unacceptable, despite his political disagreements with Macron.
French media outlets also weighed in, with some characterising Trump’s statements as another in a series of controversial outbursts.
Deepening divide over NATO and Iran
Beyond the personal jabs, the episode underscores growing tensions between the United States and NATO allies over the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Trump has repeatedly criticised European nations for failing to provide military support, particularly in securing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz—a key global oil route.
During his remarks, Trump questioned NATO’s reliability in the event of a major conflict and labelled the alliance a “paper tiger,” signalling a potential shift in US foreign policy priorities.
Macron, however, pushed back on calls for military intervention in the Gulf, describing such proposals as unrealistic and warning they could expose global shipping routes to greater danger.
Broader geopolitical implications
The war-related tensions have already had significant global repercussions, including disruptions to oil supply chains and fears of a looming economic downturn.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also indicated that Washington may reassess its relationship with NATO after the conflict, further fuelling concerns about the future of the transatlantic alliance.
As diplomatic strains intensify, analysts warn that the combination of personal rhetoric and strategic disagreements could deepen divisions between the US and its European partners at a critical moment in global security.
