A 24-year-old Nigerian man is to spend the rest of his life in prison in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of the murder of a 56-year-old mother of two in a violent roadside attack.
Chukwuemeka Ahanonu was convicted at Leicester Crown Court for the killing of Nila Patel, who died from severe brain injuries two days after the assault.
The court ordered that he serve a minimum of 21 years and six months before becoming eligible for parole.
The tragic incident occurred on June 24, 2025, shortly after a car driven by Ahanonu overturned near Leicester Royal Infirmary. Ms Patel had just alighted from a bus and was heading home when she encountered him.
According to prosecutors, Ahanonu launched a vicious attack, punching, kicking, and repeatedly stomping on her head with extreme force. The victim was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
During the trial, Ahanonu denied the murder charge but admitted to manslaughter, arguing diminished responsibility. However, after a trial lasting several weeks, the jury found him guilty of murder.
Delivering judgment, Judge Timothy Spencer KC described the killing as “brutal and merciless,” stating that the victim was deliberately targeted.
He noted that Patel appeared vulnerable and suggested that her gender, physical stature, and race may have influenced the attack.
The court also heard disturbing evidence, including remarks allegedly made by the defendant referencing race.
The judge dismissed claims that Ahanonu had little recollection of the incident, asserting that he likely remembered more than he admitted.
Emotional statements from the victim’s children were read in court. Her son expressed the deep pain of losing their mother in such a violent manner, while her daughter described the killing as senseless and life-altering.
In mitigation, defence counsel said Ahanonu was shocked after seeing footage of the incident and wished to convey his remorse.
Further details revealed that the convict had a criminal history. He had been released from prison in 2024 after serving time for offences including possession of a weapon and cash linked to criminal activity.
Prosecutors also stated that he had been involved in drug dealing, reportedly earning significant sums monthly while claiming government benefits.
Additionally, he admitted to other offences connected to the case, including dangerous driving, drug-related charges, and assaulting a police officer during his arrest.
Speaking after the sentencing, the victim’s family described her as the heart of their home — a devoted mother, sister, and friend whose loss has left a lasting void.
Police described the attack as random and exceptionally violent, emphasising that the victim had simply been returning home when she was targeted.
Investigators extended their condolences to the family, acknowledging the profound trauma caused by the incident.
