A 30-year-old homeless man on parole has been taken into custody after allegedly attempting to rape a woman in New York City’s Central Park.
The incident reportedly occurred around 5:40 p.m. on Monday near East Drive and 109th Street.
According to police and sources, the suspect, identified as Lateef Caldwell, approached a 45-year-old woman and attempted to overpower her.
Passersby quickly stepped in, stopping the man in his tracks and saving the hapless woman from further assault.
The victim, who was said to be wearing a hijab at the time, did not sustain any physical injuries.
Authorities said the suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterwards near East Drive and 106th Street.
Caldwell, who resides in a shelter on Wards Island, is now facing multiple charges, including attempted rape, attempted sexual assault, and sexual abuse.
Law enforcement sources revealed that he had been released on parole less than a year ago following a previous sexual offence in Manhattan.
In that earlier case, he was accused of attacking a 23-year-old woman in April 2022, allegedly forcing her to the ground and attempting to remove her clothing.
Although initially charged with more severe offences, he later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and was sentenced to three years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Correctional records indicate that he served his sentence between March 2023 and April 2025. His parole is expected to remain in effect until 2029.
As of Tuesday night, he was awaiting arraignment in connection with the latest incident.
