U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong ultimatum to Iran, threatening to target key infrastructure if the country does not reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

48-hour ultimatum to Iran

In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump warned that the United States would “hit and obliterate” Iran’s power plants if the waterway is not fully reopened within 48 hours.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, and any disruption has major global economic implications.

Response

The Foreign Minister of the embattled country, Abbas Araghchi, stated that restrictions currently in place are targeted only at vessels from countries involved in hostilities against the Islamic nation, while others would be allowed safe passage.

However, Iran’s military signalled readiness to escalate, warning it could strike energy and infrastructure assets linked to U.S. interests and its regional allies.

Escalation across the region

The developments come amid intensifying conflict in the Middle East. Iranian missile strikes reportedly hit southern Israel, injuring over 100 people and causing significant damage to residential areas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a broad retaliation, pledging to respond “on all fronts” as tensions continue to rise.

Strategic concerns

The situation has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict, particularly given the importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global oil supply and the growing involvement of multiple nations.
