Ogun NYSC official detained after female corps member under him dies from abortion complications

An official of the National Youth Service Corps in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has reportedly been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, is said to have died on Tuesday after complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. She has since been laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu Road.
Her passing comes just weeks after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who served in the same local government, died under circumstances that remain unclear.
Allegations emerge
Reports surrounding Ariyo’s death have raised serious concerns, with allegations linking Olalekan—who serves as the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South—to a personal relationship with the deceased. It is claimed that the alleged relationship resulted in the pregnancy and its subsequent termination.
A police source confirmed that Olalekan is currently being held at the state command headquarters in Eleweran.
The source also questioned the appropriateness of any relationship between an NYSC official and a corps member under his supervision.
Police, NYSC yet to fully respond
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the case is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department. However, he did not provide further details regarding the reported arrest or the allegations.
As of the time of reporting, the Ogun State chapter of the NYSC has not issued an official statement on the matter.
