The Benin Traditional Council has warned that a queen within the palace of the Oba of Benin Palace may be removed following an incident involving social media personality Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller.

In a statement issued by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council described the episode as a serious violation of palace protocol and an affront to the sanctity of the revered institution.

According to the council, Peller and members of his team allegedly gained access to the palace on March 6, 2026, without obtaining the required authorisation during his nationwide tour.

The statement noted that their presence and actions within the palace premises led to what it termed embarrassment and a disturbance within the sacred environment.

Emphasising the significance of the palace, the council stressed that it is not a public space or venue for casual activities, but a spiritual and cultural seat of authority in the Benin Kingdom.

Disciplinary actions underway

Following preliminary findings, the council confirmed that sanctions have already been imposed on some individuals linked to the incident.

A palace chief reportedly connected to the breach has been placed on indefinite suspension. In addition, a staff member identified as Omuemu has been detained by the Nigeria Police and charged in court for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised entry.

The council also disclosed that a queen seen in connection with the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which could result in her expulsion from the palace in line with Benin customs and traditions.

Peller summoned

The council stated that Peller has been invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his role in the matter but has yet to respond.

It further demanded that he submit a formal written apology to the palace over the incident and the perceived disrespect caused.

According to the statement, failure to comply with the directive may lead to legal consequences, as security agencies have already been notified.

Reaffirming its authority, the council maintained that it remains committed to preserving the traditions and dignity of the Benin Kingdom under the leadership of Oba Ewuare II.

It added that any attempt to undermine the institution would be firmly addressed to prevent a recurrence.
