President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reacted to the recent suicide bombing in Maiduguri, Borno State, directing top security officials to immediately relocate to the state capital to coordinate operations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the President described the attack in Maiduguri as tragic and unacceptable, while extending condolences to the families of those killed and sympathy to those who sustained injuries.
“The recent news from Maiduguri, Borno State, is deeply distressing. I mourn those who lost their lives, sympathise with the injured and stand in solidarity with the people of Borno during this difficult moment,” Tinubu said.
Terror groups acting out of desperation
The President said the attacks reflected the desperation of criminal and terrorist groups who are facing increasing pressure from Nigerian security forces.
According to him, the violent acts are attempts by insurgents to create panic among citizens as the military continues to intensify operations against them.
“I want to make it categorically clear that these acts of terror are the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals and terrorist elements trying to instil and spread fear, as they are under constant pressure from our brave armed forces and security agencies,” the statement read.
Troops commended for resisting Maiduguri assaults
Tinubu also praised the efforts of Nigerian soldiers who reportedly repelled coordinated attacks on military formations in the state.
He commended the troops for their bravery and dedication, noting that their response prevented further escalation of violence.
“I must commend the courage and fighting spirit of our patriotic troops who successfully repelled the coordinated attacks by these terrorists on military positions in the state,” he said.
The President added that he remains confident in the combined efforts of the armed forces and local security groups to contain the threat and restore stability in the region.
Additional security support approved
Tinubu disclosed that new security measures had already been approved during a recent meeting with heads of security and intelligence agencies.
He said additional equipment and operational resources were being deployed to strengthen the capabilities of security personnel fighting insurgency in the North-East.
The President further ordered security chiefs to move to Maiduguri to directly supervise ongoing operations, while emergency response agencies have been instructed to ensure proper treatment and support for victims of the attack.
