A social media commentator has offered an explanation for the growing number of Nigerians signing up for service in the United States Army (U.S. Army).
The user, Augustus, popularly known online as “King of Truth,” shared his views in a post on X, noting that perceptions about military service differ significantly between Americans and immigrants.
According to him, many Americans may not see enlistment as particularly attractive. However, for immigrants seeking stability and opportunities, the military can provide several incentives.
He explained that immigrants who hold a Green Card are eligible to enlist in the U.S. Army. Those who sign up may receive incentives such as a signing bonus reportedly worth up to $50,000.
Augustus also stated that recruits can apply for U.S. citizenship after a relatively short period of service, making the military an appealing pathway for some immigrants looking to regularise their status.
In addition to immigration benefits, he noted that the U.S. Army offers educational support to service members. This includes programs that can fund college education while they serve or after completing their enlistment.
He further emphasised that not all military personnel are deployed to combat zones. According to him, a large number of roles within the Army involve support functions such as logistics, engineering, administration, and food services.
Highlighting this point, he claimed that only a small fraction of soldiers are directly involved in active combat operations, while many others work in technical or operational support positions.
