The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the death of a Lagos socialite, Jessica Elena, who reportedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a clinic in the state.

The probe is being conducted by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) following reports circulating on social media that the woman developed complications shortly after the cosmetic surgery.

In a statement, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Abiola Idowu, said authorities had commenced a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to her, preliminary findings indicate that the clinic where the procedure was reportedly performed is registered with the regulatory agency.

However, Idowu stressed that registration does not exempt any healthcare facility from scrutiny, particularly in cases involving patient safety.

“As the statutory body responsible for licensing, monitoring and accrediting health facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all healthcare establishments operate in line with approved standards, professional ethics and patient safety guidelines,” she said.

She explained that cosmetic and aesthetic procedures carried out in Lagos are subject to strict regulatory requirements covering areas such as facility infrastructure, medical practitioners’ qualifications, infection prevention protocols, patient consent procedures, anaesthesia safety and emergency response preparedness.

Idowu added that investigators will examine whether the clinic complied with these regulations. The inquiry will also include verification of the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved and a review of the care provided to the patient before, during and after the surgery.

The Permanent Secretary reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting public health through strict oversight, regular monitoring of healthcare facilities and enforcement of medical standards across the state.
