Students and staff of Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College narrowly escaped tragedy on Monday, March 9, 2026, after their school building collapsed shortly after an emergency evacuation.

The incident occurred in the Aguda area of Ogba, where the four-storeyed school is located behind the County Hospital.

According to reports, signs of serious structural weakness were noticed earlier in the day, including visible cracks in the building and unusual sounds from the structure. Concerned individuals reportedly alerted authorities, prompting an immediate suspension of classes and a directive for all pupils and teachers to vacate the premises.

Moments after the evacuation was completed, the building reportedly collapsed completely, leaving behind piles of rubble and twisted iron rods.

Residents of the community gathered at the scene shortly after the incident, many expressing shock at the scale of the collapse but relief that no one was injured.

A nearby resident, who identified herself as Funke, said the sight of the fallen structure initially caused panic among neighbours. However, she said people were relieved after learning that all the children and staff had already been safely evacuated.

Parents who rushed to the area reportedly found their children standing at a safe distance from the debris while teachers attended to them.

Community leaders and religious figures also reacted to the incident, expressing gratitude that the collapse did not result in any casualties.

Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency have reportedly been notified and are expected to assess the collapsed structure as well as the surrounding buildings in the area.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Ministry of Education had not issued an official statement on the incident, though sources said the state governor’s office had been informed.
