Woman crushed, six others injured in auto accident in Lagos

An unidentified woman has lost her life, while six other people were injured in an early morning accident today at the Castle Bus Stop along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in Lagos State.

The woman was thrown out of a commercial vehicle, which collided with the kerb. Unfortunately, she landed in front of a speeding truck, which ran over her.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the crash in a statement.

He disclosed that LASTMA officials efficiently coordinated traffic and contacted the necessary emergency unit to take care of the injured.

Taofiq identified the commercial bus as a Volkswagen with the registration number LSD 654 XY. According to him, the bus veered off course and struck the kerb.

The impact of the collision forcefully ejected the female passenger onto the expressway, according to him. The driver of a speeding articulated trailer was not able to avoid the passenger who fell on the roadway. 

The LASTMA spokesperson said the victim died on the spot.

The survivors of the incident reportedly recorded various degrees of injury, including fractures. Tragically, 

Taofiq said the agency cordoned off the expressway to allow safe evacuation of the victims and the wreckage.

He announced that the driver of the trailer that ran over the commercial bus passenger fled the scene, while the driver of the bus sustained injuries and was hospitalised.

Taofiq siad security personnel from the Pedro Police Division assisted the LASTMA team to maintain order.

The officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the body of the deceased woman from the scene.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sent his condolences to the family of the deceased. He prayed to God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss of their loved one.

Bakare-Oki also wished the injured passengers a swift and full recovery.

The same Sunday morning, two trucks collided on the Arepo Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. There were no casualties, but two people sustained injuries

Eye-witnesses said  the crash occurred around 4 am, involving an empty American Cola truck and a Seaco truck.

The accident interrupted the free flow of traffic along the busy expressway. Officers of the  Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) later arranged for the towing of the affected trucks off the road.
