The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a retired school vice principal, Abdullahi Kasim Ayodele, for allegedly beating his neighbour, Caroline Agoi, to death during a dispute in Owo.

The incident was said to have occurred along Uselu–Isuada Road in Owo, within Owo Local Government Area.

According to sources in the community, the altercation began after a nylon bag was reportedly blown by the wind into the suspect’s compound.

It was gathered that Ayodele allegedly accused the 54-year-old woman of throwing the nylon bag into his premises, leading to a heated argument between the neighbours across their fence.

Witnesses said the disagreement later escalated when the suspect and his son allegedly left their compound and went to the woman’s residence to confront her.

During the confrontation, Ayodele allegedly picked up a bench in front of the woman’s house and, with the assistance of his son, attacked her with it.

The victim was said to have collapsed during the assault, with foam reportedly coming out of her mouth. She was later confirmed dead.

A source in the area said the deceased was speaking with her husband on the telephone when the suspect allegedly stormed her residence and struck her with the bench.

“The quarrel started because the man accused the woman of throwing the nylon bag into his compound. The wind had blown it there, but he insisted it belonged to her,” the source reportedly told The Hope Newspaper.

It was further learnt that the deceased’s husband, who works as a driver to the Olori of the Olowo of Owo, reportedly fainted after returning home and hearing about the incident.

He was said to have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre Owo for medical attention.

Residents of the area have expressed shock over the incident, describing it as a tragic escalation of what began as a minor dispute.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Jimoh Abayomi, said the suspect had been taken into custody, and investigations were ongoing.
