A presenter with Al Jazeera, Mehdi Hasan, has released video clips showing Nigerian presidential aide Daniel Bwala making statements about President Bola Tinubu that he earlier denied during a television interview.

The exchange occurred during an episode of Hasan’s programme, Head to Head with Mehdi Hasan, where Bwala appeared as a guest to discuss Nigerian politics and his role in the current administration.

During the interview, Hasan questioned Bwala about his current support for the government, noting that the lawyer had previously been a vocal critic of Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The presenter cited several past statements allegedly made by Bwala against the president. However, Bwala repeatedly denied making the remarks.

At one point, Hasan recalled a claim attributed to Bwala that Tinubu and his associates had created a militia used to attack opposition members.

“I never said that,” Bwala responded during the programme.

Hasan also referenced an earlier allegation in which Bwala reportedly claimed the same group had attempted to kill him. The presidential aide again dismissed the claim.

“He doesn’t have, I never said he tried to kill me,” Bwala said.

The host further mentioned comments in which Bwala allegedly said he was unable to eat after Tinubu “fraudulently” came to power following the 2023 Nigerian presidential election.

Bwala also denied making the statement.

“What you just said now, I want to put it on record, on my honour, that is not what I said,” he said during the interview.

However, Hasan later released video clips showing Bwala making statements similar to those he had denied during the programme.

The development has sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating the exchange between the two men and Bwala’s past criticism of the current administration.
