Controversy has erupted online after Sunday Igboho, the well-known Yoruba Nation advocate, was seen wearing a cap branded with the logo of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at a public event in Ibadan.

The video of him greeting traditional leaders while sporting the party’s colours quickly went viral and ignited heated debate on social media platforms, especially on X (formerly Twitter).

In the widely shared clip, Igboho attended the Ramadan lecture hosted by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, where he was captured engaging with attendees while wearing the APC cap.

The sight has been interpreted by many netizens as a political alignment or defection, although Igboho himself has not publicly declared formal membership of the party.

Reactions have been sharply divided. Some commentators criticised what they see as a departure from Igboho’s earlier activism for Yoruba self-determination, arguing that associating with a mainstream political party contradicts his longstanding stance outside conventional party politics.

One user described the gesture as “shameless” and said it undermines the struggle he once symbolised.

Others defended his choice, suggesting that engaging with established political structures could be a strategic move or simply a personal decision unrelated to his prior advocacy.

A few supporters noted that he recently resurfaced publicly after being removed from the federal government’s wanted list following intervention by monarchs and political stakeholders.

As of now, Igboho’s spokesperson has not issued a detailed statement explaining the intent behind the appearance with the APC cap, leaving many questions unanswered as the discussion continues online.
