File: A truck and tricycle accident

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that one person died while three others sustained serious injuries in a road accident at Aiyetoro Junction in the Epe area of Lagos State.

The crash involved a truck loaded with yams and a commercial tricycle. It reportedly occurred when the truck driver lost control while attempting a U-turn at the junction.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations showed that the truck, bearing registration number AGL 764 XB, was travelling from Ijebu-Ode.

The driver allegedly tried to make a U-turn toward Eleko when he lost control and collided forcefully with a stationary tricycle marked SMK 127 QR.

The impact, according to the statement, resulted in one fatality and left three occupants with severe injuries.

Taofiq explained that LASTMA officials who were on routine traffic duty in the area responded immediately to the scene.

They worked alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and military personnel to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage.

He added that operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps transported both the deceased and the injured victims to the General Hospital in Epe for medical attention and other necessary procedures.

Security agencies were also said to have maintained order at the scene and ensured the smooth restoration of traffic.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.

He further called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash, urging relevant authorities to ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in line with the law.
