A female officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) sustained serious injuries on Saturday morning after she was struck and run over by an operational van during a show of force exercise in Abuja.
The incident reportedly occurred in the Federal Capital Territory during a convoy manoeuvre demonstration organised as part of routine operational drills.
Sources familiar with the exercise said officers were carrying out a coordinated display of tactical vehicle movements when the accident happened. Witness accounts indicate that one of the operational vans lost alignment while executing a sharp turn at speed within the convoy formation.
Video footage from the scene shows two official vehicles participating in the demonstration. In the clip, a dark-coloured van with red rims is seen making a fast turn in an open space moments before the situation escalates.
Confusion follows as the vehicle appears to veer out of formation.
Eyewitnesses suggested that the affected officer may have either fallen from the moving vehicle—possibly due to an unsecured door—or been knocked down during the manoeuvre before becoming trapped beneath one of the tyres.
Officers and bystanders at the scene immediately rushed to assist. Several individuals were seen attempting to lift the vehicle in a bid to free the trapped officer.
After she was extricated, the injured officer was transported to a hospital in an ambulance for urgent medical attention.
As of press time, the NSCDC and the FCT Police Command had yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident or the officer’s condition.
