Gunmen kill 67-year-old retired teacher on farm in Oyo

Tragedy struck the Tede community in Atisbo Local Government Area of Oyo State as suspected gunmen reportedly shot dead a 67-year-old retired teacher, Mr Abel Oyedokun Atilola, on his farm.

It was gathered that the incident occurred along the Irawo Road area of the town, where the deceased had gone to tend to his crops.

Community sources told our correspondent that Atilola, who retired from active teaching years ago, had devoted his time to farming and was well known in the area for his quiet lifestyle and commitment to agriculture.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the late teacher was attacked while working on his farmland.

“He left home for his farm as usual. Later, we heard he was shot. It is shocking and painful. He was not a troublemaker; he was a peaceful man,” the source said.

The killing has reportedly heightened fear among farmers in the Oke-Ogun axis, many of whom now say they are apprehensive about returning to their fields.

Residents lamented that repeated security breaches in rural communities were threatening livelihoods and food production, calling on authorities to take urgent steps to address the situation.

They specifically appealed to the Oyo State Government and the Oyo State Police Command to intensify security patrols and dismantle criminal elements operating in Atisbo and neighbouring communities.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in the state for confirmation were ongoing as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, sympathisers have continued to mourn the deceased, describing him as a devoted educator who contributed to shaping young minds before returning to agriculture after retirement.

Residents said his death underscores the urgent need for improved security in farming communities across the state.
