President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police (IGP), sources have confirmed.

Senior officials within the Presidency and the police hierarchy say Egbetokun was directed to prepare his handover notes after meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He will be succeeded by Tunji Disu, who currently serves as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police and heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

Although no formal statement has been issued by the Presidency or the Nigeria Police Force, multiple news outlets report that the change in leadership is part of a broader shake-up of the nation’s security leadership.

Preparations are reportedly underway for a formal handover ceremony.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd IGP by President Tinubu in June 2023 and confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council later that year.

His tenure had been the subject of public debate, particularly over the mandatory retirement age rules and an amendment to the Police Act that allowed an IGP to remain in office for a fixed four-year term regardless of age.

Tunji Disu, who will take over the leadership of the Force, is a seasoned officer with a background in key command roles, including leadership positions in major police commands across the country.

At the time of filing this report, the police spokesperson had yet to comment on the development.

This is a developing story; further official details are expected to be released later today.
