A Nigerian man, Ayo, has shared details of his deportation from the United States, alleging that he endured harsh treatment throughout the removal process.
In a video recounting his experience, Ayo, with the handle Ayomifull on TikTok, claimed that deportees — particularly Nigerians, who he said were the final passengers to be dropped off — spent no less than 36 consecutive hours in restraints, including handcuffs, leg irons, and waist chains.
According to him, they were unable to properly stand or stretch during the lengthy journey.
He further alleged that meals were consumed while still restrained and that detainees had to use restroom facilities under the same conditions.
The aircraft reportedly made five stops before arriving in Nigeria, which he described as the final destination on the route. He characterised the flight path as unnecessarily extended.
Speaking about the restraints, he said air marshals and security personnel informed them that the cuffs could not be removed because, while aboard the aircraft, they were still legally considered to be on United States soil, even after leaving American airspace.
He also claimed that elderly deportees were subjected to the same procedures.
Despite his account of the conditions, the man clarified that he does not consider his deportation itself to be the primary issue.
Instead, he expressed concern over what he described as his treatment while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and during the deportation process.
He added that he is grateful to have returned home safely, noting that his wife and family are relieved that he is no longer in detention.
Clips of his account have since circulated online. See one here.
