A Nigerian woman has generated widespread reactions on social media after disclosing that she began receiving bank transaction alerts shortly after buying what she believed was a brand-new SIM card.

The incident was shared on X by user @Olami_deeEbony, who expressed shock over the unexpected notifications.

According to her, she had just purchased and activated a new MTN line when she started getting debit alerts from United Bank for Africa, despite not operating an account with the financial institution.

The woman later suspected that the number may have previously belonged to someone else and was likely recycled by the telecom provider.

She noted that additional debit alerts continued to enter her phone after activation, indicating that the former owner might still have the number linked to their banking transactions.

Narrating her experience, she questioned how a supposedly new SIM card could come with another person’s financial notifications and private information.

She described the situation as not only strange but also risky, highlighting the potential privacy and security concerns associated with recycled phone numbers.
