A Nigerian family has been plunged into mourning after a mother of four, Mrs Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi (née Oluwalana/Ogundana), died less than 20 hours after arriving in the United Kingdom to attend her child’s graduation ceremony.
Tragic turn after arrival
According to accounts shared online, Mrs Akinyemi arrived in the UK on February 11, 2026, ahead of her child’s graduation scheduled for February 18. Family members said she appeared healthy and excited about celebrating the milestone.
However, in the early hours of February 12, she reportedly suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.
She was rushed to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, where doctors worked to stabilise her condition.
Three days in coma
Medical personnel placed her under close monitoring following the cardiac episode. She remained in a coma for three days as relatives hoped for recovery.
Sadly, she was declared clinically dead on February 14.
Community in shock
The unexpected loss has left friends, family members, and members of the Nigerian community in the UK in deep shock.
Described by loved ones as a devoted mother, Mrs Akinyemi had travelled with joy and anticipation to witness her child’s academic achievement. Instead, the family now faces the painful task of making burial arrangements.
Tributes have continued to pour in on social media, with many expressing sorrow over the sudden loss and praying for strength and comfort for her children and relatives during this difficult time.
