Renowned American civil rights activist, Jesse Jackson, has passed away at the age of 84.
Jackson, a towering figure in the United States civil rights movement and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning, surrounded by family and close associates.
In a statement announcing his death, his family said:
“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Civil Rights leader and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Honourable Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. He died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his loved ones.”
Jackson rose to national prominence in the 1960s as a key figure in the fight for racial equality and economic justice. Over the decades, he became one of the most recognisable voices advocating for civil rights, political inclusion, and social reform in America.
Beyond activism, Jackson made history with his presidential bids in 1984 and 1988, breaking barriers and expanding political participation for African Americans.
Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, civil rights organisations, and global figures who have described him as a relentless advocate for justice and equality.
His death marks the end of an era for one of the most influential figures of the American civil rights movement.
