Motorist killed, wife critically injured as truck dumps granite on them on Lekki-Ajah Expressway

A man has lost his life while his wife sustained critical injuries after a granite-laden truck overturned and crushed their vehicle at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos.
The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday, February 12, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary findings indicate that the articulated truck, travelling from the Epe axis toward Ajah, suffered brake failure as it approached the junction.
The mechanical malfunction reportedly caused the driver to lose control, leading the truck to veer off course and collide with a Toyota saloon car heading in the opposite direction. The impact caused the truck to topple onto the smaller vehicle, crushing it under its weight.
Emergency responders, including officials of LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), worked with bystanders to rescue the occupants trapped inside the wreckage.
The male driver was extricated but was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed for urgent medical treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene shortly after the crash. Police officers from the Akodo Division secured the area and maintained order during rescue and recovery operations.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as tragic and avoidable, extending condolences to the bereaved family and wishing the injured woman a full recovery.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws, particularly regarding speeding and vehicle maintenance.
In a separate incident the same day, a 33,000-litre fuel tanker caught fire near Ile-Zik along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
Emergency teams successfully contained the blaze, and traffic was temporarily diverted before normal flow was restored.
