Traffic congestion: FRSC to sanction motorists driving against traffic on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned that motorists who drive against traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway will be sanctioned as rehabilitation work continues on the Kara Bridge.
The Lagos Sector Commander of the corps, Kehinde Hamzat, issued the warning on Monday during an inspection of traffic conditions along the busy corridor. He said enforcement would apply to all road users, including security operatives and government officials.
Hamzat described reports of official vehicles driving one-way as unacceptable, stressing that no one is above traffic regulations.
He disclosed that details of violators are being documented and forwarded to their respective agencies for appropriate action, noting that internal disciplinary measures are often stricter than FRSC penalties.
Traffic on the expressway has worsened following the commencement of repair works on the Kara Bridge, which the FRSC earlier said would last for at least two months.
According to the corps, damaged sections of the bridge had contributed to repeated crashes, particularly when motorists attempted to dodge oncoming vehicles.
To hasten completion, two expansion joints are currently being repaired simultaneously using faster-curing materials. Hamzat also linked part of the road damage to excessive loading by heavy-duty vehicles, revealing that weighbridges would soon be deployed to address the issue.
On traffic management, the sector commander said FRSC personnel have been strategically positioned along the route to prevent motorists from driving against traffic, especially at flashpoints such as Warewa and the Opic axis.
He acknowledged that vehicles heading into Lagos are experiencing delays due to construction-related backlogs but urged motorists to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline.
Hamzat warned that allowing one-way driving at critical points could completely disrupt traffic flow on both sides of the expressway. He added that several motorists have already been arrested for violations and would be fined or prosecuted accordingly.
The FRSC, he said, will maintain a continuous presence on the corridor, working in shifts and in collaboration with other security agencies, until the rehabilitation works are completed.
