
Unidentified gunmen, suspected to be cultists, have killed the President-General of Ogidi community, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, popularly known as Anumili, and one other person in Anambra State.
The fatal attack occurred on Friday evening, February 6, at the School Field, Ogidi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
According to local sources, the assailants stormed the area and opened fire, killing the community leader and another man, believed to be his relative, whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the attackers were suspected to be members of a rival cult group, allegedly carrying out a revenge attack following the arrest and killing of their leader by local security operatives.
“Daredevil gunmen invaded our community last night. By the time they were done, the town’s President-General, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, and another victim who was in his company were lying dead,” the source said.
“The incident happened at the School Field, Ogidi. The PG and a relation from the same village were shot dead by gunmen suspected to be cultists.”
Police confirm incident
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, described the killing as tragic and said it was allegedly connected to the recent capture and killing of a notorious cultist in the community.
“The Anambra State Police Command regrets the murder of the President-General of the Ogidi community and one other person,” Ikenga said.
“The incident, which occurred on the evening of February 6, 2026, at the School Field, Ogidi, is allegedly linked to the recent capture and killing of a known notorious cultist within the community.”
He added that police operatives swiftly took control of the scene and have commenced a full investigation.
“The command is currently working with eyewitness accounts and other available intelligence to identify and arrest the perpetrators,” he said.
“All efforts are being intensified to bring those responsible to justice. Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue.”
The police assured that further updates would be communicated as the investigations progress.
