A gospel artiste, Apostle Niyi Peter, has shed light on why several gospel artistes were noticeably absent at the burial of the late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi.

In a post that circulated on social media on Tuesday, Peter claimed that the doctors had told the singer she would die, and she had shared specific burial wishes with close friends and associates.

According to him, Omije Ojumi had asked for a befitting burial that would draw wide attention, prompting some gospel artistes — including Alayo Melody — to begin making arrangements.

He said expenses for the coffin, cemetery space, event hall and over 100 customised T-shirts had already been settled before the family reportedly intervened.

“A lot had been prepared for Omije’s burial. The coffin, hall, cemetery and T-shirts were paid for. But when the family got involved, they went to the police and said they were not in support of what the artistes were doing,” Peter wrote.

He further alleged that the family had the woman who stayed with the singer during her hospitalisation arrested, insisting on collecting Omije Ojumi’s phone.

“They didn’t want the artistes to be part of the burial arrangements, and we couldn’t force ourselves. We were even threatened with arrest if we showed up,” he added.

Peter claimed that the family was carried along before Omije Ojumi’s colleagues went into an elaborate preparation for her burial, according to her last wish.

He claimed that the family raised no objection at the time, but made a U-turn when they saw the amount of money already expended.

Peter expressed suspicion that the family pulled the plug on the arrangements being made by Omije Ojumi’s colleagues because they thought they were spending her money and wanted to find out where her money was.

He claimed that the money spent was from the pockets of colleagues, spearheaded by gospel singer, Alayo Melody.

Apostle Peter used the situation to advise people battling terminal illnesses to legally document their burial wishes to avoid disputes after death, including involving a lawyer or recording a video.

The burial, held at Atan Cemetery in Lagos, sparked intense reactions online, particularly over the absence of well-known gospel musicians.

Peter’s video has generated lots of reactions online, with many commending him and his colleagues for their roles. At least one person who claimed to know Omije Ojumi’s family said the family had no intention of cornering the late gospel singer’s properties, because they were all financially comfortable.

The Facebook user named Oyebade Oluwasegun Eazy Sax wrote: “Eberu Olorun ooo… Even her family are buoyant enough. They are financially okay, I can tell you. Saying they are after her property is a big lie. They are only securing it for her children’s purpose. I oppose the point that they are trying to gather money. They are not fighting for property ooooo…

Most of them base overseas. Eberu Olorun sir ooooooooooo”
