Nollywood mourns as actress Aunty Ajara dies after battle with liver disease
Pregnancy complicated her condition- doctors

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular diminutive Nollywood actress, Aunty Ajara, who passed away after a prolonged battle with liver disease.
The actress, known for her vibrant screen presence and comic roles in Yoruba movies, had been critically ill for weeks, prompting colleagues and well-wishers to appeal for financial support to fund her medical treatment.
Just days before her death, fellow actress Mama Nonetwork disclosed that Ajara’s health had continued to deteriorate despite ongoing care.
In an emotional update shared online, she revealed that doctors had also discovered that the late actress was pregnant — a development that further complicated her fragile condition.
According to Mama Nonetwork, the pregnancy was confirmed in December, and Ajara was immediately advised to seek urgent medical attention because of the severe strain it posed on her already failing liver.
“She was very weak, and the doctors said the pregnancy made things more risky. We were doing everything possible to save her,” she said at the time.
Sadly, despite efforts by colleagues, fans, and donors who contributed toward her hospital bills, news of her passing was confirmed on Wednesday morning.
Aunty Ajara had become a familiar face in grassroots Nollywood productions, particularly in Yoruba-language films, where she was loved for her humour, expressive acting, and ability to bring life to supporting roles.
Many actors described her as hardworking, humble, and deeply passionate about her craft despite the challenges she faced in the industry.
Following the announcement of her death, tributes have continued to pour in across social media, with actors, producers, and fans expressing heartbreak over the loss.
“This one hurts deeply. We tried our best. Rest well, Ajara,” one colleague wrote.
Another added, “She suffered quietly but always smiled on set. Nollywood has lost a gem.”
Her death has once again sparked conversations about healthcare access for entertainers, financial struggles faced by grassroots actors, and the need for better welfare structures within the Nigerian film industry.
Details of her burial arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
