A 45-year-old man has died after entering a deep well in an attempt to rescue a goat in Saki, Oyo State.
The Oyo State Fire Service also recovered the body of another victim, a 30-year-old man, Shina Adedeji, from a separate well in Ogbomoso.
The incidents were confirmed on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms and Chairman of the state Fire Service, Moroof Akinwande, in a statement issued in Ibadan.
According to him, the first distress call was received on Monday at about 10:23 pm that a man had fallen into a deep well at the Mokola area of Saki in Saki West Local Government Area.
He said fire officers, led by PFS II Kolade Taiwo, mobilised to the scene and discovered that a man of about 45 years was trapped inside the well.
“Our officers quickly swung into action, secured the area with the necessary equipment, and successfully recovered the man from the well,” Akinwande said.
He added that the victim had voluntarily entered the well while trying to rescue a goat but became trapped and eventually died.
On the second incident, Akinwande disclosed that the agency received another emergency call at about 9:45 am on Tuesday from the Aaje Ikose area of Ogbomoso in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area.
He said firefighters, led by CFM Oladejo, arrived at the scene and recovered the body of Adedeji, who had fallen into a well while attempting to retrieve a fetcher.
“The casualty was trapped in the well, which contained ammonia gas,” he stated.
The fire service boss warned residents to always prioritise their safety and avoid engaging in risky rescue attempts without professional help.
He recalled that a similar incident occurred on January 25, 2026, when the agency recovered the body of a 33-year-old man from a deep well at a filling station in the Alakia–Adegbayi area of Ibadan.
Akinwande urged members of the public to promptly contact emergency services in distress situations, stressing that “life has no duplicate.”
