A 43-year-old woman, Mary Agbenu Edorla, has alleged that she lost her husband of three years to a female police officer, Divina Afenu, who was handling a domestic dispute case she reported at the Tema Katamanso Police Station.

According to Edorla, her husband, Stephen Tengey, became romantically involved with Detective Chief Inspector Divina Worlanyo Afenu, an officer in charge of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) at the station.

Speaking in an emotional interview with the Daily Guide, Edorla said the dispute began after a domestic helper in her home stole some money and left the house.

Police later recovered the girl, and Edorla was invited to the station to give her statement. She said the officer requested that her husband travel to the girl’s village to bring her parents for the investigation—a request he complied with.

“After the case was settled, I started noticing frequent calls from Chief Inspector Afenu to my husband, often late at night. He said it was part of their investigations, and I initially accepted that,” Edorla said.

Her suspicions reportedly grew when she discovered inappropriate photographs sent by the officer to her husband’s phone, which eventually confirmed an affair.

Edorla further claimed that she saw her husband leaving Afenu’s residence one morning after spending the night there. When she confronted them, she alleged that her husband assaulted her.

“I first reported the matter to senior officers at the station, but nothing was done. I later escalated it to the Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Adu,” she said.

“I introduced my husband to her while she was investigating a case I was involved in. She requested his help, and all I saw later was her having an affair with him.”

Chief Superintendent Kwadwo Badu-Adu, the Tema Divisional Commander, confirmed that the allegations have been brought to his attention.

He said the DOVVSU unit is handling the matter, but noted that efforts to reach Stephen Tengey, the man at the centre of the controversy, for questioning have been unsuccessful.
