Lagos Assembly calls for rescue of abducted corps member after her mum went to market to beg for ₦30m ransom (Video)

The Lagos State House of Assembly has appealed to security agencies and relevant authorities to urgently secure the release of a prospective corps member, Binuyo Lateefah, who was abducted while travelling for her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) assignment.
It would be recalled that Lateefah’s mother recently went to the market to canvass for funds from strangers in desperation to raise the N30 million the bandits demanded.
Raising a motion of urgent public importance on Thursday, the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Mrs Omolara Olumegbon, called for the intervention of the state in the matter.
Olumegbon disclosed that Binuyo Lateefah, a Mass Communication graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic, was kidnapped on January 22, 2026, along the Kogi State axis while en route to Taraba State for her deployment. She added that the abductors were demanding a ransom of ₦30 million.
The lawmaker urged the House to formally approach the Federal Government to enhance security for prospective corps members travelling to their places of assignment across the country.
She also called on the Assembly to engage Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to intervene by working with the Kogi State Government to ensure the victim’s safe return.
Another lawmaker, Tobun Abiodun, suggested that the House, through the National Assembly, should write to the Director-General of the NYSC to review deployment policies, especially postings to distant or high-risk locations, to reduce exposure to danger.
Ruling on the matter, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that it was painful for young Nigerians eager to serve their country to face threats such as kidnapping.
He emphasised that the NYSC leadership must take responsibility for ensuring the safety of corps members from the point of travel to their destinations and back home.
Obasa added that while he believed the Lagos State Government had already begun interventions, further steps should be taken, including formal communication with the Kogi State Government and the Inspector-General of Police to secure Lateefah’s release and prevent similar incidents.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Kogi State Police Command, Saliu Afusat, confirmed the abduction, stating that security operatives were working to rescue the victim.
“Yes, I am aware of the incident. I cannot disclose details, but efforts are ongoing to secure her release,” she said.
