There was drama at the funeral of the late gospel singer, Bunmi Akinnanu, better known as Omije Ojumi, when a man claiming to be the biological father of her children insisted on speaking with them during the service.

The children and the mourners were at the graveside when the relatives of the man announced that he would like to make a speech via telephone since he was not in town.

A woman believed to be a representative of the man placed a call to him and attempted to hand the phone over to the eldest child, Jomiloju, but she was not keen on collecting the phone.

The woman then put the call on speaker phone, enabling everyone to hear what the man was saying from the other end.

In the call, he introduced himself as their father and explained that he had been trying to locate them for years but had been blocked from contacting them.

“I’m your father, and I’ve been searching for you. Years ago, I even called your school while you were at Front Liner, but your mother would not allow me to speak with you. I don’t know how she found out, but police were brought in to arrest the teachers,” he said in the video.

Some members of the family of the late singer became uncomfortable at the direction the conversation was going.

They spoke up that the occasion was not suitable for the kind of discussion the man was raising. They asked for the call to be terminated immediately.

This was resisted by the family of the man, who noted that the man had a right to speak with his children, but the family of the deceased had their way.

A brief commotion ensued after the call was terminated as everyone was speaking on top of their voices.

A second clip shows the son of the deceased kicking and screaming as he was being dragged away, as a female voice can be heard screaming at him: “ Your father loves you”.

The incident has since sparked widespread discussion online, with debates about the timing of the call and sympathy for the children caught in the emotional turmoil.

Omije Ojumi passed away after a prolonged illness and was laid to rest amid tears, heartfelt tributes, and celebrations of her life, music, and dedication as a mother.
