Tragedy at LASUTH: Ambulance driver found dead inside hospital toilet

Ambulance

Shock and sorrow swept through the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Monday after a staff member was discovered lifeless inside a restroom within the hospital premises.

The deceased, identified as Aliye Saka, popularly known by colleagues as Baba Niye, was an ambulance driver attached to the hospital’s emergency unit.

According to reports, Baba Niye had excused himself to use the toilet, but never came out alive.

Colleagues at LASUTH raise alarm after hours of silence

Eyewitnesses said concern began to grow when the driver failed to return after a long time.

A food vendor at the hospital, Mama Bola, who spoke in shock, said people only became suspicious when repeated knocks on the toilet door went unanswered.

“When someone knocked, and there was no response, we thought maybe he was just inside. But after about an hour, another person came back, forced the door open and found him sitting there — dead,” she recounted.

She added that Baba Niye had appeared perfectly healthy earlier that morning.

“I saw him before. He didn’t look sick at all. That’s why this is so painful and shocking.”

Hospital confirms death

A medical doctor at LASUTH, Dr Babalola, confirmed the tragic incident, while officials of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) also acknowledged the loss.

JOHESU chairman at the hospital, Comrade Odedeyi Adekunle, verified that the deceased was a union member but declined further details.

“The deceased is our member, but I cannot comment beyond that,” he said.

A sudden loss that has left many in tears

Staff and patients at the hospital were reportedly thrown into mourning, with many describing Baba Niye as hardworking, friendly, and dedicated to saving lives through emergency services.

His sudden death inside the very hospital where he worked has sparked sadness and questions among colleagues.
