A new video has shown Kingsley Ikenna Ughelumba, the biological father of Super Eagles and Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, breaking down in tears as he begs for a reunion with his children and their mother.

The clip was taken out of a live session by Helen Atis, the Kenyan baby mama of Cubana Chief Priest, Pascal Okechukwu.

In the clip, which has attracted significant public interest and debate, Ughelumba appears emotional and apologetic, expressing regret for past actions and pleading for a chance to reunite with his family.

He claimed in the video that he left his family in the United Kingdom with the children, after she refused to give him the passport of their last son, born in Ireland, so that he (the father) could renew his stay in the UK.

Ughelumba claimed his wife took the decision because of a minor disagreement between him and her.

He further claimed that since he was not able to legalise his stay in the UK, he decided to relocate to Italy where he had permanent residency.

Ughelumba claimed he made efforts to reconnect with the family, but was always blocked by the wife.

He said he later travelled to Leicester to see Calvin and got as far as the reception, where he told the receptionist to tell Calvin that he (the father) wanted to see “BIGGIE”.

The father said that was the name he called Calvin when he was little, and that upon hearing that, he gave the receptionist an address to pass on to him for them to meet.

He narrated that when he got to the address, he spoke to his son, and he appeared friendly until he called his mother.

Ughelumba claimed that after Calvin spoke with his mother, he changed his attitude towards him and asked him to go away and never return.

When Helen, the moderator, asked him what he did to the woman to warrant her hostility to him, he said he would not want to say it on social media, because of the future of the children.

He then apologised and begged for a chance to be in his children’s lives once again.

The reaction to the video has brought renewed attention to the well-documented family background of the Nigerian international.

In an interview published in The Athletic on 23 December 2023, Bassey spoke candidly about his father’s absence during his upbringing.

According to the defender, he was born in Italy to Nigerian parents and lived with both parents until he was about six years old, at which point his father left the family.

Bassey described how his mother raised him and his brother largely on her own after that point.

It was during that interview that he explained why he no longer uses his father’s surname — choosing instead to adopt his mother’s name, Bassey, on his football shirts as a tribute to her sacrifices.

Reflecting on his childhood, the star defender credited his mother with working hard to bring the family to England and give them the opportunities that ultimately helped shape his football career.

He also noted that he honoured her with practical gestures, such as buying her a house after signing his first professional contract, as a way of showing appreciation for her efforts.

At the time of writing, neither Calvin Bassey nor his representatives has issued an official response to the trending video.
