Motunrayo Kuti, daughter of legendary Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has weighed in on the escalating online clash between her brother, Seun Kuti, and Nigerian music superstar Wizkid, firing back after the singer claimed he was “bigger” than her late father.
Her reaction, delivered in a fiery video now trending on social media, has further inflamed an already tense debate among fans of both camps.
What triggered the outburst
The controversy began after Wizkid, during a social media exchange with Seun Kuti, declared: “I big pass your papa.”
The statement, widely interpreted as a direct comparison between himself and Fela Kuti, quickly went viral and sparked backlash.
The exchange is believed to be linked to a dispute over the nickname “Big Bird,” which Seun Kuti uses online—similar to Wizkid’s long-standing alias.
Motunrayo Kuti’s reaction
Responding to Wizkid’s comment, Motunrayo released a video in which she accused the singer of disrespecting Fela’s legacy and reducing history to popularity metrics.
In the video, she sarcastically echoed Wizkid’s claim, saying that if success is measured that way, then Wizkid must also be “bigger” than his own father.
Her remarks included strong personal insults, which have since drawn criticism for crossing into deeply personal territory.
She argued that Fela’s influence transcends commercial success, insisting that his cultural, political, and historical impact cannot be compared to modern-day fame.
Public reaction divided
Motunrayo’s comments have triggered mixed reactions online.
While some supporters applauded her for fiercely defending her father’s legacy, others criticised her language as excessive and unnecessary, noting that the exchange shifted from artistic rivalry to personal attacks.
Fans take sides
As expected, social media has split sharply:
Wizkid’s fans argue that global reach, awards, and modern relevance matter.
Fela loyalists counter that his revolutionary role in African music and politics places him beyond comparison.
With neither camp backing down, the feud—now involving multiple members of the Kuti family—shows no signs of dying down.
Wizkid has not responded directly to Motunrayo Kuti’s video as of the time of filing this report.
