
Two commercial buses collided inside the Independence Tunnel inward Maryland, Lagos, Nigeria, leaving one driver dead this morning, Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours, involved a TATA bus and a mini bus, according to information released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Footage shared by the agency on X captured the aftermath of the crash, showing emergency responders working to secure the scene.
LASTMA confirmed that the mini bus driver lost his life on the spot due to the impact of the collision.
Following the accident, a tow truck was dispatched to evacuate the damaged vehicles, while LASTMA officials and rescue personnel managed traffic and prevented a complete gridlock along the busy corridor.
In a brief update, the traffic authority noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
The incident has renewed public concern over the frequency of accidents around major Lagos expressways, particularly during peak and low-visibility hours.
