Popular Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat has explained the motivation behind his decision to seek the Oyo State governorship ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking on his programme on Agidigbo FM on Monday, Hamzat said his decision to enter the race under the Accord Party followed deep reflection, consultations, and what he described as divine approval.
The media personality, widely known for his signature Yoruba phrase “E gbenu si mic” (speak into the microphone), thanked supporters and advisers who attended his recent rally while also acknowledging those who cautioned him against contesting.
According to him, he carefully considered all opinions before taking the matter to God in prayer.
“I listened to those who encouraged me and those who warned me not to run. I presented everything to God, and I received clarity to go ahead,” he said.
Hamzat stressed that his decision was not intended to offend anyone, noting that those who advised against the move did so out of love and concern.
“If my choice has upset anyone, I sincerely ask for forgiveness. I now ask for your support as I pursue this calling,” he added.
He maintained that his ambition is driven by a desire to serve the people, insisting he does not intend to follow the path of corrupt leadership.
“I want to serve genuinely. I believe the people are with me, and no one was paid to attend the rally,” he said.
Addressing sceptics who doubt his chances, Hamzat said he has moved beyond fear of defeat or electoral manipulation.
“We are no longer debating whether I will win or lose. What matters now is moving forward, and I ask for your support,” he stated.
Hamzat formally announced his governorship ambition on Saturday during a rally at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, where he described his entry into politics as a response to a divine call.
He disclosed that he had never planned to seek elective office, explaining that his past political involvement was limited to supporting other candidates.
“Today, I publicly declare my intention to join the Accord Party and contest the Oyo State governorship election in 2027,” he told supporters.
The broadcaster also clarified that his ambition is not fueled by wealth, political godfathers, or government backing.
“I don’t have money, influence, or support from those in power. I have come with God, and that is enough for me,” he said.
