A woman has taken to social media to accuse a Lagos-based Travels Agency of being behind what she describes as a deadly scam that led to the death of her cousin after he was allegedly misled into a so-called “Study in Russia” programme.

In a video that has gone viral on Twitter, the woman claims that her cousin was convinced by the agency — which purported to help Nigerians secure study opportunities abroad — to pay a substantial sum of money for a travel document and placement under a programme promoted as an educational opportunity in Russia.

However, she alleges that the offer was a trap tied to recruitment into Russia’s ongoing military effort in Ukraine, rather than a genuine academic study.

According to her account, her cousin only realised the true nature of the arrangement after signing up and paying the fees requested by the agency.

“He thought he was getting a real study programme,” she said in the video, “but he did not know it was connected to Russia’s war efforts until it was too late.”

She further claimed that her cousin died on the war front, describing his death as the tragic result of deception and exploitation by the travel agency. Despite his passing, she said Felicia Travels has continued to promote its “Study in Russia” packages online, prompting her to warn others not to fall for similar schemes.

Experts and officials have previously warned Africans about fraudulent recruitment networks that misrepresent work, study or job placements abroad.

In Kenya, authorities uncovered a network that lured citizens with promises of jobs in Russia, only to prepare them for roles linked to the war in Ukraine, sometimes resulting in physical and psychological harm to recruits.

Some were found in safe houses awaiting deployment after paying recruitment fees to intermediaries.

As of this report, the accused Travel Agency has not responded to the allegations.
