The family of renowned gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, has announced the suspension of all burial plans due to unresolved issues within the family.

The update was made public on Saturday by fellow gospel musician Lanre Alewilese, who shared the information via his Instagram page. According to him, the burial planning committee has halted all arrangements pending further decisions by the family.

Alewilese explained that the action became unavoidable following internal family concerns, expressing regret over any inconvenience the development may cause to supporters, colleagues and members of the public who had been making preparations to attend the burial.

Before the announcement, several funeral activities had been lined up in Lagos, including a service of songs, candlelight procession and tribute night scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, at the LTV 8 Ground in Ikeja. A private burial for family members and close associates was also planned for Wednesday, January 21.

In a subsequent video message delivered in Yoruba, Alewilese clarified that the suspension was not his personal decision. He stressed that the resolution was jointly reached by the family and the burial planning committee, adding that he was only asked to formally communicate the decision to the public.

He further disclosed that all previously announced programmes had been placed on hold and assured that fresh information would be shared once the family resolves the outstanding issues.

Omije Ojumi passed away on January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos. Her death was earlier confirmed by gospel singer Alayo Melody, who released an official statement on Instagram on behalf of the family announcing her passing and praying for her eternal rest.

Popularly identified with her hit gospel song Omije Ojumi, Akinnaanu started singing at a young age and later left a career in banking to fully embrace gospel music and evangelism.

In October 2025, a video of the singer surfaced online showing her during a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, where prayers were offered for her over an undisclosed health challenge. However, no formal link has been established between the illness and her eventual death.

The family has indicated that new burial arrangements will be communicated to the public in due course.
