The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical personnel following the death of a housewife, Aishatu Umar, after a pair of surgical scissors was allegedly left in her stomach during surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was confirmed on Wednesday by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman.
She said the action followed a preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mansur Mudi Nagoda.
According to Suleiman, findings from the initial probe confirmed that the incident involving the late Umar occurred at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, prompting decisive steps by the management.
“In line with our commitment to accountability, professionalism, and patient safety, the Board has suspended three personnel who were directly involved in the case from clinical duties with immediate effect,” she stated.
She added that the matter has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for a comprehensive investigation and further disciplinary action, in accordance with existing laws, professional regulations, and ethical standards guiding medical practice in the state.
The Board reassured members of the public that it would not tolerate any form of negligence within state-owned health facilities and would continue to take firm measures to protect the lives and dignity of patients.
It also noted that efforts are ongoing to strengthen internal monitoring systems, enforce professional standards, and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents across hospitals under its supervision.
The late Aishatu Umar reportedly died following what her family described as suspected medical negligence after undergoing surgery at the hospital in September 2025.
A family member, identified as Mohammed, alleged in a Facebook post that Umar had complained of persistent and severe abdominal pain for several months after the operation. He said the pain lasted for about four months before her condition deteriorated.
Mohammed further disclosed that the deceased, who was married with five children, passed away around 1 am on Tuesday.
Following public outcry over the incident, the State Hospitals Management Board had earlier ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
