The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi, has debunked claims circulating on social media that she sponsored a bill before the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to criminalise relationships between women and married men.

A statement issued by her Press Secretary, Omen Bassey, said the claims were false and fake news.

The social media post claimed that the State House of Assembly was set to pass a law on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, which would impose a 10-year jail term without an option of fine on any woman found sleeping with a married man, while the man involved would allegedly pay a ₦2 million fine. The report further alleged that the bill was sponsored by the Deputy Governor.

Describing the claim as false, misleading and baseless, the statement categorically denied any such involvement by Senator Eyakenyi.

“Her Excellency, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi has not sponsored any Bill in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly or anywhere else, and she is not aware of the existence of the purported Bill,” the statement said.

The Deputy Governor’s office further explained that, constitutionally, she cannot personally sponsor a bill in the State Assembly.

As a member of the State Executive Council, any executive bill must first be deliberated upon and approved by the Council before being transmitted to the legislature by the Governor or a duly authorised representative.

The statement also noted that the viral report did not originate from any official communication channels of either the Akwa Ibom State Government or the State House of Assembly.

Members of the public were therefore urged to disregard the fake report entirely and rely only on verified government sources for accurate information, warning that misinformation of this nature could incite unnecessary tension and mislead citizens.

The Deputy Governor reaffirmed her commitment to responsible governance and public accountability.
