Tragedy struck the River Valley Estate area of Ogun State after a middle-aged man, identified as Mr Ayoola Ayanwale, was found dead in what authorities believe to be a suspected suicide, hours after he allegedly killed his wife, Ayobami Ayanwale, in their home.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, January 8, following a domestic dispute between the couple.
Neighbours in the estate said they were alerted by loud sounds coming from the family’s apartment and rushed to investigate.
Upon arrival, they discovered Ayobami, a mother of three, critically injured. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by residents who tried to assist her.
According to eyewitnesses, Ayobami was conscious during the journey and repeatedly asked for water while expressing confusion over the attack.
She was later pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Medical personnel reportedly informed the family that her injuries had caused severe internal complications.
Family members have accused Mr. Ayanwale of inflicting multiple injuries on his wife during the altercation, allegedly in the presence of their children.
The victim’s elder brother, Muritala Shogbade, described the incident as devastating and called for justice, stating that the family is still struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Residents also alleged that after the incident, the accused husband returned to the apartment and attempted to clean the scene before leaving the area.
Barely 12 hours later, on Friday, January 9, Ayanwale was discovered in distress in an open field in the Sotubo area of Ogun State.
He was later confirmed dead by a medical professional. Items recovered at the scene included personal identification documents, mobile phones, and a bottle containing an unidentified substance, further fueling suspicion that his death may have been self-inflicted.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed both deaths. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said investigations are ongoing and that a comprehensive statement will be released upon conclusion of preliminary findings.
The incident has sparked renewed conversations around domestic violence, mental health awareness, and the need for early intervention in family disputes.
Authorities have urged residents to report domestic conflicts promptly and seek help through appropriate channels to prevent similar tragedies.
Further updates are expected as the police investigation continues.
